Winter Maintenance Drivers - NY Highways

LGV (HGV) Drivers wanted for Winter Maintenance Service

HOURS: Variable

LOCATIONS: ACROSS NORTH YORKSHIRE INCLUDING: Thirsk, Stokesley, Seamer Carr, Skipton, Boroughbridge, Harrogate (Penny Pot Lane), Selby

About The Role

We are currently looking for LGV (HGV) Drivers to join our winter maintenance team based at various depots throughout North Yorkshire, local to you. Winter Maintenance is the one of the most important and critical services that NY Highways provide to the communities of North Yorkshire.

Our winter season generally starts early/mid October, depending on the weather forecast, and runs for at least 26 weeks. During this time, it is essential that we keep as many routes open as possible throughout the county. To achieve this, we provide a 24 hr, 7 day a week service running multiple routes across the county.

During the winter, we have a large number of drivers that return every year as they find the work rewarding, and they can fit it in around their other commitments.  This role may just suit you if you’re just looking for something temporary over the winter period and depending on your availability there are many ways in which you can join our winter maintenance team.

The timing of the work is determined by the weather forecast.  You will need to be able to commit to joining at least one of our standby rotas and have some flexibility based on weather conditions.  Our standby rotas are:

·       weekday morning standby rota (midnight to 7.30am Monday to Friday)

·       weekday evening and weekend standby rota (4.00pm to midnight Monday to Friday plus 24 hours on both Saturday and Sunday)

These hours can vary depending on your duties and the weather, so a degree of flexibility will be required.

By joining us you will be keeping our communities and residents safe and connected, quite literally providing them with a vital emergency service. The impact of your support is to keep road users safe, enabling people to attend work, school, vital healthcare appointments and emergencies. In many ways, the North Yorkshire Winter Maintenance LGV / HGV Drivers are the fourth emergency service; and we are vital to the success of the other three emergency services too!

At NY Highways, we are working hard to create a dynamic and inclusive environment and it is important that our people come from a variety of different backgrounds.

Working for NY Highways, 'who you are' matters to us. We want to get to know you. If you share our values and are proud of a job well done, if you pride yourself on working well with others, and are ambitious to make things better, then please have a read of what we have on offer.

What does being a Winter Maintenance HGV/LGV Driver involve?

You will be part of the winter maintenance operations which will include operating gritting vehicles including the use of snowploughs (where required) during adverse conditions, loading, driving and cleaning the vehicles.

What skills and experience do you need?

It is essential that you have a LGV (often referred to as HGV) class C or above driving licence along with a CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) Licence

It would be helpful although not essential if you also have;

  • Ability to use small plant equipment, experience of using a loader and bucket attachment and, as your health and safety is our top priority; experience of Manual Handling and Emergency First Aid is useful.
