Job Title: Graduate Trainee – Graphic Design

Location: County Hall, Northallerton and home-based working
Grade: E, F, G
Salary: 1-6 months £19,698, rising to £20,493 after 6 months and then £22,627 for the final 12 months of the scheme.
Contract: 2 years fixed term position as part of the NYCC graduate programme
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week

 

We now have an exciting opportunity for a graduate to join our Central Services Team as an Graphic Design Trainee. 

The council’s design team sits within the council’s Communications Unit. This is where the post holder duties will be carried out. The wider Communications Unit provides a communications service which covers media relations, web and internet (including social media), internal communications, marketing, consultation, campaigns, design and corporate identity and public information, working with all services, at all levels and with external organisations.

 

The core design service is to support the delivery of a professional communications service for the council. The design service also has a number of external commercial clients that the post holder will help to support. The post holder will do this by providing a professional and expert design service, including for a range of digital and print mediums, enabling and delivering successful outcomes for services and customers.

 

The post holder will be able to learn how design and marketing work together, effectively take a brief whilst all the time increasing their standards of typography, brand awareness and corporate guidance.

A graduate design role will involve a range of creative lead design work for digital and print platforms.

Working as part of a team designing for public sector organisations as well as in-house and external commercial clients. Led by Paul Robinson, providing clients with a creative and strategic insight to their work, Paul’s previous roles include being a senior designer and brand expert at a leading North East agency, with over 20 years’ experience in the design and advertising world, working with international and high profile clients.


It will require:

·       The ability to follow brand guidelines and how to use those flexibly

·       An understanding of typography and the ability to demonstrate a creative and strategic approach to a client’s brief

·       Being able to manage project timescales while contributing towards the team’s financial target

·       Knowledge of Adobe design packages such as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator and a basic understanding of Microsoft applications

 

Animation and video editing skills would be an advantage but not essential to the role.

 

Essential criteria for this Graduate opportunity: Design degree or equivalent design HND

Desirable criteria for this role: Knowledge of Animation, video editing, digital qualification
