Project Lead – North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area

Location: Flexible with regular travel across Scarborough, Whitby and Filey

Salary: SM1 - £48,000 to £55,840

Fixed-term, one year contract until 31 August 2021 – secondments welcomed

‘A better education means giving every child and young person the chance to reach their full potential.’

The North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area is now in its fourth year and forms part of the DFE agenda on further raising education standards and social mobility in areas of the country - ours is across the North Yorkshire Coast (Scarborough, Whitby and Filey). Our focus is on improving early years education, boosting literacy and numeracy skills and helping more of our secondary schools become good and outstanding. This is underpinned by key projects, which help to support and achieve this.

Our coastal area includes seven secondary schools across Whitby, Scarborough and Filey and a University Technical College (UTC) based in Scarborough. Over the last three years a sense of collaboration and teamwork across all schools, Headteachers, Trusts and the Local Authority has been embedded and we are now seeing our vision of ‘Supporting Social Mobility through Education’ become a reality.

A key project for our fourth year is to continue to work together to make sure that all our students thrive in their education. We recognise that for some of our children growing up across the coast is not easy, and together we are tackling the underlying reasons why children can become disengaged with education and school and be subject to fixed-term or permanent exclusions. This includes looking at the support and help around social and emotional health/wellbeing for children and their families, and providing a tailored coastal whole-school approach to improvement. This is where you come in!

Our Opportunity

We are looking to appoint a Project Lead who will lead on further reducing the number of fixed term and permanent exclusions across the OA, and build strategies that our schools and services can access and implement successfully.

You will:

·       Build a framework of inclusion in our schools that is based on mutually respectful relationships

·       Review behaviour and inclusion strategies with our schools to make sure they are the best they can be

·       Build the capacity of our schools  and their teams so they are able to respond to and meet the needs of children and young people who are facing challenges

·       Provide appropriate support for families to support the needs of their children; and work in partnership to develop a curriculum offer for children and families to access

Work has already started on this key project and you will be able to access our network of Headteachers and our Lead for Social, Emotional and Mental Health that will all support your work and allow you to quickly make an impact.

As this can be offered as a one-year secondment until the end of August 2021, we actively encourage interest from current middle and senior leaders with relevant experience to apply. If you are looking for an opportunity to develop your skills in the education sector, and lead a project with a national-profile and that will have significant impact for young people, then we would love to hear from you.

What we are looking for:

·       A colleague who has comprehensive knowledge of the SEN code of practice and understands the current SEN provision and accountability frameworks our schools and settings are working within.

·       Comprehensive knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice.

·       A colleague who has experience of intervention programmes and teaching and learning strategies ideally within their current or previous roles

What we can offer

·       Professional development opportunity to develop your leadership and management skills by leading a national project

·       An opportunity to gain exposure to different schools and bring these skills back to your school/role

·       Benefits package through NYCC which includes agile working and technology to allow you to do your best work

Given the current COVID situation, essential visits only to schools and key stakeholders will take place by following appropriate risk assessments. We very much support agile working across our organisation allowing you to work from home and other NYCC bases, subject to business requirements.
