Location: Hybrid working with the expectation to visit County Hall, Northallerton and client premises, as required.

Contract: Permanent Full time.

Team: Business Partnering Services Team

We are going through major change in North Yorkshire as we prepare for a new single council to run all district and county council services from April 2023 and the Finance team is at the heart of this change.

We are looking for talented individuals to support us and our clients through this change and beyond ensuring high quality financial management services shape the new Council and continue to provide valued support to our customers into the future.

Our Team

Our Finance Team provides financial support and advice to internal customers within North Yorkshire County Council, and also provides services to Schools and Early Years Providers as well as external customers including the North Yorkshire Pension Fund, the North York Moors National Park Authority and currently Selby District Council, Ryedale District Council and Scarborough Borough Council. Services are also provided to the Council’s traded services including North Yorkshire Education Service and the Council’s wholly owned companies operating within the Brierley Group.

The role

As our Accountant, you will play a key role in the delivery of the Finance function of the Council, focusing on specific aspects of our services. Our team supports a range of clients and although our roles are generic and subject to rotation, the current vacancy is in the Business Partnering Services Team  supporting district councils and a national park.

You will be responsible for providing high quality financial information, advice and support. Technically sound, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of projects as well as playing a key role in the reporting, budgeting, forecasting and closedown processes. Based in finance but working closely with internal or external clients, operational managers and project teams, the role requires a self-starter who is comfortable operating with light touch supervision.

What you will bring

As a minimum, you will be a qualified (level 4) with the Association of Accounting Technicians or equivalent body, with evidence of substantial continuing professional development beyond attaining membership. You will have substantial experience of operating financial systems and processes and an understanding of their capabilities to recognise the potential for process improvements through their use. You will have the ability to develop approaches and techniques having understood the brief and the customer requirements, and be highly organised. You will have experience of resource planning and managing a team to deliver a range of outputs for a number of different customers. You will be customer focused and be highly effective in communicating with a wide range of stakeholders.

Working for us

In return, we can offer you opportunity to develop your skills and experience, and progress your career whilst making a real difference to the work of our diverse range of clients.

We want you to work to live, not live to work, we want you to enjoy the things in life that really matter to you and this is important to us. We can offer you a varied and rewarding career and a range of employee benefits including a competitive salary, generous leave entitlement, flexible working hours, a government pension scheme, a salary sacrifice scheme to support career development and access to our ‘Everybody Benefits’ package which includes a variety of retail discounts. You will have the flexibility to work from home, visiting office and client premises as business needs require.

Whilst you as a candidate are applying for a vacancy with an individual District, Borough or the County Council, if you are successfully appointed, you will become an employee of your council only up to March 2023. From April 2023 their employment contract will migrate to a newly formed unitary Council.
