Contract: Relief

North Yorkshire County Council have a vacancy for a Relief Deaf Inclusion Worker to work in the Whitby Area.

About the role

Are you someone who is passionate about Deaf education and would like to be part of a team supporting a Deaf student reach their potential in a mainstream setting? We currently have a vacancy for a Deaf Inclusion Worker to join us on a relief basis.

You will be part of a small and knowledgeable team enabling this student to access his lessons and the broader school curriculum. You will be employed centrally by North Yorkshire County Council and receive student specific training by the child’s Teacher of the Deaf.  You will skilfully support this student using a range of communication methods. These include British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE) and preferably Cued Speech.

You will be working with a range of professionals including class and subject teachers, the school Senco, a Speech and Language therapist and the Teacher of the Deaf. In order to support this student’s achievement you may also be required to prepare visual resources (e.g. adapting the teaching material to ensure it is accessible). In addition to in-class support, you may also be required to assist the student with pre and/or post tutoring and teach specific programmes as specified by the Teacher of the Deaf.

About you

We are looking for someone who has experience of working with children, preferably within an education environment. You need to have the requisite signing skills (at least BSL Signature Level 2) and be familiar with Sign Supported English. If you have knowledge of Cued Speech, this would be an additional bonus. If you experience of hearing technology this would be beneficial, though training in this area will be given.

This is a tremendously rewarding role.
