Accountant

Post: Accountant
Salary: £34,788 to £38,813 p.a.
Contract: Full time
Location: Northallerton

The finance team provides financial advice and support across the council, as well as to other partner organisations including Selby District Council, Ryedale District Council, North York Moors National Parks Authority and the companies of which we are a shareholder.

Compared to more traditional accountancy roles, these positions will give you the opportunity to be an enabler to managers, whilst influencing and challenging as appropriate. You will be an ambassador for customer self-help as you support budget managers to monitor and manage their own budgets through maximising technology and delivering efficient services that add value. You will support a wide variety of front-line services, including children, adults, business, social care, highways and IT. We also provide services to schools and early years providers, as well as external customers, including the North Yorkshire Pension Fund and an increasing number of commercial companies.

About the role

As an Accountant with us, you will play a key role in the delivery of the finance function of the council. Due to the continued growth of the service, we have a number of different positions available, all of which will focus on specific aspects of the overall finance delivery covering tasks such as commercial finance, business partnering support to budget managers and transformation projects and technical financial reporting.
You will be responsible for providing high quality financial information, advice and support. Technically sound, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of projects as well as playing a key role in the reporting, budgeting, forecasting and closedown processes. Based in finance but working closely with operational managers and project teams, the role requires a self-starter who is comfortable operating with light touch supervision.

About you

You must be able to manage your own performance to meet objectives and provide an excellent customer focused service, potentially in a political environment.  The ability to work flexibly and proactively to your own initiative, to pay attention to detail and understand and interpret information is essential, as are good interpersonal, Excel and technical skills.

Key dates
